Overview

Fullrange Microfinance Bank needed a mobile banking application to give their customers convenient access to financial services. The brief came with a feature list, including some features I had not designed before, and a clear directive: make it accessible, trustworthy, and useful for customers who may not be highly tech-literate.

Security: the false balance system

One of the standout features of this project was a security mechanism I designed around a threat that standard banking apps rarely address directly: coercion. In environments where physical safety is a real concern, a user who is forced to reveal their PIN faces an immediate risk from their account balance being visible. I designed a false PIN system where the user sets a secondary PIN that, when entered, displays a false balance capped at 2,000 naira. The real account is never accessed. The user can credibly hand over their phone, and the attacker sees nothing of value.

This feature became a standout differentiator for the product.

Savings: resolving the access tension

The initial savings design used a single vault model with strict access restrictions. User feedback revealed that this was too inflexible: customers wanted to save meaningfully but also needed occasional access to their funds. Rather than loosening the vault, I introduced two distinct savings products. The standard savings account offers flexible access. The vault maintains strict access restrictions for users who specifically want the discipline of a locked account. This gave users agency over their own financial behavior rather than imposing a one-size approach.

Additional Features
