Overview
Uber One Banking is a savings and rewards platform that incentivizes financial behavior through gamification. Users earn rewards for saving, shopping at partner merchants, funding stock accounts, and funding betting wallets. A raffle system runs across all account types, with eligibility tied to savings behavior. The design challenge was making a financially complex product feel simple and motivating to use.
Discovery
Before beginning any design work, I conducted a structured discovery session with the client, working through the product requirements document to surface ambiguities and decision points that would affect the design. The questions covered the full product surface: how raffle eligibility was calculated across different account types, what happened to user funds if they did not win, how the shop-to-win verification process worked at partner stores, how the stock and game integrations handled edge cases where users funded accounts but did not transact, and how the admin and agent platforms would function.
This process revealed several areas where the client had not yet made definitive decisions, and others where existing requirements would create user experience problems that were not obvious from the BRD alone. Resolving these before design began prevented expensive rework later.
Key Design Challenges
Funding flow
The initial funding flow required manual back-office approval before a user could credit their account. This created a delay that was incompatible with the product promise of immediate participation in savings rewards. After the compliance framework was established to support it, I redesigned the funding flow around virtual accounts: users receive a dedicated virtual account number and can fund it through any bank transfer, with the balance reflecting almost immediately. This removed the manual approval bottleneck entirely.
Account type clarity
Four account types with different rules, eligibility conditions, and reward structures could easily become confusing. I designed the account selection and management flows to surface only the information relevant to each account type in context, rather than presenting all rules upfront. Users engaging with Save to Win see the save-to-win rules. Users engaging with Shop to Win see those rules. The underlying complexity is present but does not overwhelm the primary action.
